Costs of Lens Exchange Surgery
The cost of a Lens Exchange operation is made up of three components:
- The surgeon's fee
- The anaesthetist's fee
- The hospital's charge
Lens Exchange surgery is usually performed as a day case without an overnight stay in hospital, and using a local anaesthetic. If an overnight stay is required, or requested by the patient, the hospital charge will be higher.
Private Medical Insurance
For those patients with private medical insurance it is essential to check with the insurer what cover is provided before arranging a consultation or surgery. Lens Exchange surgery is often not covered by private medical insurance. This is because a refractive error (e.g. shortsight and longsight) may not be considered by some to be a disease, and that surgery for it is not correcting a disease. The insurer should be informed that the procedure being contemplated is: phacoemulsification of the lens with an intraocular lens implant (OPCS code C7122) for the purpose of correcting a refractive error (and not for treatment of cataract). It is important to explain to the insurer the reason for the surgery.
If Lens Exchange surgery is covered by a private medical insurance policy also check whether any excess charges are payable. An excess charge means that a part of cost of treatment will be payable by the patient then the total charges may be different.
Self Funding
For those patients funding their own private medical treatment the costs of Lens Exchange surgery with Mr Heaven are:
- Fee for initial outpatient consultation - nil
- Cost (per eye) of private Lens Exchange surgery performed as a day case procedure at Fulwood Hospital, Preston - £1945*
This includes:
- Mr Heaven's fee for the surgery and all outpatient follow up visits up to 3 months post-operatively.
- The anaesthetist's fee.
- The hospital charge without an overnight stay.
- The cost of the (standard) intraocular lens implant.
This does not include:
- The costs of overnight(s) stay in hospital
- The costs involved in any re-admission to hospital or further procedures.
