Cataract Surgery

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Most cataracts are nowadays removed using a local anaesthetic and as a day case, i.e. no overnight stay in hospital is required. Usually the surgery only takes 10 to 15 minutes to perform using a technique known as "phacoemulsification". Once the cataract has been removed a replacement artificial lens is inserted into the eye. This is known as the "lens implant". In most cases no stitches are needed. Small incision sutureless cataract surgery is the commonest procedure Mr Heaven performs.
